Number Utility

The Number utility is designed to help you with various numerical calculations and references. It is broken into five sections: Fraction to Decimal, Decimal to Fraction, Unit Conversion, Page Size and Image File Size. Each section works independently.

Fractions

Fraction to Decimal
Converting fractions to decimals can be a tedious task. This section of "Number" can be used to do just that. Numbers must entered using a "Whole-numerator/denominator" to receive the proper results. (i.e. One and one-eighth would be entered "1-1/8")

Decimal to Fraction
Enter the decimal number you'd like converted and select the denominator of which you'd like the number represented. Because converting from decimal to fraction requires rounding to the selected denominator, results may not be exact (i.e. .5 can never be represented by 1/3's). If the results in this area are not exact, a "Caution" indicator will appear alerting you. Click the caution indicator and ADT will round the decimal to the resulting fraction.

Unit Conversion

"Units" is a utility for unit conversion. The units of measure selected for this area are common among the design/publishing industry. By entering a number in the edit field and selecting its unit of measure from the radio buttons, the equivalent lengths for each unit of measure will appear to the right. Please note the Points used for this and all of Art Directors Toolkit's sections are based on Postscript Points (72 units/Inch). Pixels are based on 72 pixels per inch.

Page Size

This simple utility gives you the specified standard page size measurements based on the selected unit of measure.

Image File Size

"Image File Size" helps you anticipate raw file sizes for various images. Input the image's dimensions to be calculated along with the unit of measure you're using. Next enter the resolution at which the image is to be stored. The unit of measure can be set in both the image size and the resolution independently. Select the image's color via the pop up button on the left. This section also allows you to choose 8 or 16 bits per channel for most color modes. This utility is especially helpful for anticipating pricing/media requirements prior to having images scanned.

The results of this section show both the file size as well as the number of horizontal and vertical pixels. Please note "Image File Size" results do not show up in the "Global Results" window.
