Main window

Main window of CharView looks like this:

- Font popup menu (if Font grouping is enabled you can see two menus - font family name and font style name)- click and select the font you wish to see
- Preferences button - click to see the CharView menu, including some options which available also in the preferences dialog
- HTM button - toggles the insertion mode: "HTML entities" if down, "symbols" if up
- ARROWS button - select next (click down) or previous (click up) font to display

Main window floating above all documents windows, it can be hidden (shown by the menu icon).

Setup

At the first launch of CharView its menu icon is enabled, Dock icon is invisible. Move mouse pointer above menu icon and main window will be shown.
To change application options, click Preferences bevel button and select Preferences... item. You'll see the default settings:

- Movable Menu Icon
If enabled, the main window of CharView will be hidden and shown only if the user moves the mouse pointer into a small icon c_hot.gif (144 bytes) in the menubar
- Invisible
If enabled, the menu icon will be invisible. To view it temporarily, hold down "Move Icon" combination of keys
- Transparent Main Window
If checked, CharView's main window will be transparent. You can enter transparency value from 0 to 100.
- Timeout for window show
setting in seconds for window show timeout.
- Timeout for window hide
setting in seconds for window hide timeout

- Group fonts by families
If enabled, fonts in font menu will be groupped by names
- Remember YYY last fonts used
If enabled, the last YYY fonts will be shown at the top of the fonts menu.
- Use magnification with font size: - set font size of selected (magnified) symbol (if checked)
- Move Menu Icon
Here you can setup key combination for menu icon moving (and show if it is invisible)

- Stop magnification

Key combinations for emporarily disabling auto-magnification of selected character.
- Clipboard-driven insertion for Classic
If enabled, CharView will show itself and than hide again after clicking in the characters table (if Dock Icon Visible enabled).
Not needed if you plan to use OS X - native applications only or Dock Icon Visible not checked.
- Dock Icon Visible
If checked, CharView's icon will be shown in Dock, if not checked - CharView will work as background-only process.
- Show 5 last inserted characters
If checked, CharView will hilite last 5 inserted characters in the table.

CharView menus

CharView menu:

CharView menu attached to Preferences prefs_i.gif (220 bytes) button contains Preferences menu (some options for fast access), and several commands:
- About CharView ... - shows info about application
- Refresh fonts - refreshes fonts menu
- Page setup ... - shows system Page setup dialog
- Print - here you can print font's characters tables (ASCII or Unicode)


Mode menu:

CharView can display font in two ways:

1) only ASCII characters (256)
2) entire font (any UTF16 character if the font).

To show only ASCII chars, select ASCII in mode menu,
to show Unicode symbols, select Entire font from mode menu, and then needed font table from menu or using scroll bar.

Fast font searh

edit_font.gif (981 bytes) Font name can be typed directly by user in font name text box.
CharView will try to help you when you type and set font names based on your input.

Inserting a symbol

Follow this steps to insert a symbol into the frontmost application:
1. Move the mouse pointer above CharView main window.
2. Select the font.
3. Move the mouse pointer over the symbols table. By default, the symbol under the pointer will be zoomed.
4. Click on it. The selected symbol will be copied to clipboard and inserted into the frontmost application.

You can right-click (or Ctrl+click) on symbol to show contextual menu. Using it you can insert not only symbol itself, but also it's HTML entity, decimal or hexadecimal code.

Inserting an HTML entity

Follow this steps to insert an HTML entity or symbol code number into the frontmost application:
1. Click button to enable "HTML mode"
2. Follow the instructions from Inserting a symbol to insert HTML entity or code number for selected symbol.

Also you can directly insert HTML entity using contextual menu without enabling "HTML mode" first.

Menu icon

If the menu icon is enabled, the small icon is shown on the menubar hot.gif (828 bytes).
Move the mouse pointer above it and the main window will be shown like a menu. No click nesessary.
Move the mouse pointer out of the main window and window will be hidden.

Moving menu icon

You can move the menu icon in the menubar to any position.
To do this: click in the menu icon while holding down the special keys (setup in Preferences), and drag it to the preferred location.
When drag starts you'll hear a system beep.
